This standing Storyteller by Caroline Fragua Gachupin is a lovely example of this delightful tradition in Pueblo pottery. Caroline uses local clays and natural slips to create these figures.
The pottery figures, called Story Tellers, commemorate the oral tradition of Elders telling children stories they had heard in their youth. Folk Tales, religion and customs were passed from one generation to the next.
The Pueblos of New Mexico developed their own styles and decorations and these styles are a live art, constantly changing but always using tradition as the touchstone.
