Maria Martinez and her daughter-in-law, Santana created this large, stone polished black plate. The matte slip design uses a bear track motif. The plate is hand coiled, stone polished to a high sheen, then a matte slip is added for the design. The plate then is pit fired and smothered with organic material, infusing smoke to create the famous black pottery. Maria and Santana created pottery together from 1943 until 1956.
