Native people have used shells and turquoise to form bead necklaces since prehistoric times. The Spanish brought silver to the Southwest in the 1500's. Natives did not make their own silver jewelry until the Navajos learned in the 1850's. It wasn't until the 1880's that turquoise was set in silver. Modern artists use traditional and contemporary designs in their unique necklaces.
